3rd Down: Continue the dominant defense

The dominance of the New England Patriots defense goes back to the playoffs last year.

Despite giving up a lot of points in second half of the divisional round win against the L.A. Chargers and then in the AFC title game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the defense was a major reason why New England won it all. The Patriots D held the L.A. Rams offense to three points and thoroughly dominated most of the game.

Heading into the 2019 season, the defense only got better… and it has shown in the stat sheet. The New England Patriots defense ranks No. 1 in points allowed (5.7 per game), total yards allowed ( just under 200 yards per game), pass yards allowed (over 160 yards per game), and rush yards allowed (less than 40 yards per game).

The New England offense has certainly been dominant at times and is a reason why the Patriots are 3-0, but the defense has played a much bigger role thus far. If that same defense continues its dominance against the Buffalo Bills, then the New England Patriots will sit atop the AFC East at 4-0 by the end of the day.
