Rob Gronkowski reflects on most memorable TD spikes
In a recent interview, retired New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski reminisced on some of his favorite touchdown spike celebrations.
Rob Gronkowski has certainly discovered a knack for staying relevant and keeping his name and visage in the public spotlight, even after having retired from the New England Patriots and the NFL over six months ago now.
NBC Sports Boston’s Justin Leger shared a recent sit-down interview where the tight end was asked to reflect back on some of his most memorable touchdown celebrations over the course of his nine-year career. Gronkowski is of course famous for putting an exclamation mark on every score he was responsible for, via the often-imitated but never-duplicated “Gronk spike.”
With 79 career touchdown receptions to choose from in the regular season – and an additional 12 touchdowns in postseason action – it’s remarkable he didn’t just sit in his chair and repeat the word “uhhh” over and over again, as he certainly had a ton of options to choose from and cycle through in his memory.
Gronk did come up with his favorite spike though: the one that occurred after he scored a touchdown over the St. Louis Rams overseas in London back in 2012. Gronkowski promptly got up to his feet and did a bizarre stutter-step, Frankenstein-esque dance that he claims was supposed to be a tribute to Buckingham Palace Queen’s Guard royal soldiers… or something.
He also then added a second selection from the same game, which the Patriots ended up winning 45-7. The second time Gronk scored a touchdown, he did another strange celebration: some sort of gyrating, hip-swinging, booty-thrusting dance with the football that would make Antonio Brown proud.
Coach Bill Belichick, however, was not impressed:
"“I got yelled at the booty-shaking one that day,” Gronkowski said in the interview. “Just shaking my booty around. (Belichick) is like, “The first one was fine, but you gotta shake your booty on the second one?””"
The Patriots could use Rob Gronkowski and the accompanying touchdown spikes he brings with him this season. While New England looked formidable in an opening-week victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, they have just two tight ends on their current active roster, neither one of which is expected to make much of a difference in 2019.
