New England Patriots: Injury has Braxton Berrios low on depth chart

Braxton Berrios (LOSER)

Once thought to be a future Wes Welker type, Braxton Berrios hasn’t done nearly enough this camp to warrant a spot on the Patriots’ roster heading into the regular season. He came on all guns-blazing during New England’s early practices and OTAs back in May before significantly cooling off in July and August.

Remember: Berrios was actually drafted in 2018, but he spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve. He was naturally considered to be a logical replacement for some of the lost production that followed Cordarrelle Patterson out the door, but the emergence of Meyers has essentially snuffed that dream out prematurely.

Berrios hasn’t been bad through two weeks of the preseason and in joint practices with the Lions and Titans. Unfortunately for him though, Meyers has just been that good. It also doesn’t hurt that Josh Gordon got reinstated, Julian Edelman is healthy again, and now even Demaryius Thomas looks like he might in fact be ready for the regular season after all.

Consider that 12 different players had more receptions and receiving yards than Berrios (zero receptions on one target) in New England’s victory over Tennessee. When you’re fighting for a roster spot as a receiver, you just can’t afford to come up with a big fat goose egg in the stat sheet during the preseason, no matter how talented you are.

Especially not on the Patriots.
