Running back Sony Michel drew a parallel between the Golden State Warriors and the New England Patriots, and some Twitter users weren’t happy about it.

Sony Michel simply made one obvious comparison between two of the most dominant franchises in recent sports history. Unfortunately for him, though, there were plenty of users on Twitter who didn’t want him to state the obvious – and they made sure he heard them, too.

The Patriots running back, who electrified the NFL last year with 12 total touchdowns (half of which came in the playoffs) and over 1,200 rushing yards in 16 games of action, took in Game 2 of the NBA Finals and observed what most of us observed: that the Golden State Warriors are really, really good. The team bounced back from a loss in Game 1 to knot up the series 1-1 and bring it back to Oracle Arena in Oakland.

While Warriors fans were predictably pleased with the result, many other basketball fans were disappointed to see the Raptors fall. After all, Toronto is playing in its first-ever NBA Finals series; whereas Golden State is playing now in its fifth-straight. That much wasn’t lost on Michel, who made the following observation via tweet:

A number of users immediately responded in the affirmative, as in: yes, they want the Warriors to lose because they win too much, and yes, they also hate the Patriots.

Rooting for David against Goliath is nothing new, especially in America. This is a nation that loves the underdog story, after all. Perennial bullies and topdogs like the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Alabama Crimson Tide, and now both the New England Patriots and the Golden State Warriors are reviled and vilified for their dominance over their competition.

Next. Patriots have now finalized all of their rookie contracts. dark

Interestingly enough though, while the Cowboys, Yankees, and Crimson Tide all have decades-long traditions of winning in their respective sports disciplines, the Warriors and the Patriots are relatively new to this whole ‘Goliath’ thing.

Before Golden State won three of the past four NBA championships, it had been 40 years since their last title. And the Patriots were easily one of the worst teams in the NFL (and the AFL) before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady arrived at the turn of the millennium.
