Bill Belichick fires up Bruins crowd as Game 2 banner captain
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick worked the crowd at TD Garden as the honorary banner captain for the Bruins’ second game of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Julian Edelman did his part when the Boston Bruins needed him, serving as banner captain and chugging a beer on the Jumbotron to fire up the Massachusetts hockey crowd in a Game 7 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Patriots center David Andrews also got in on the action, chugging a beer during his time serving as banner captain in a Game 5 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
While New England head coach Bill Belichick wasn’t spotted chugging any beers – at least not that we know of – he still did his city proud on Wednesday while serving as the Bruins’ honorary banner captain in Game 2 of their Stanley Cup Final against the St. Louis Blues.
Dressed in all black, Belichick waved a massive Boston Bruins black-and-gold flag back and forth before thousands of cheering fans. The normally stoic, grim-faced coach even cracked a wide smile, clearly enjoying the moment to a certain degree; even if he probably didn’t enjoy being in the spotlight itself.
Belichick reportedly attended the game with his son Brian Belichick, as well as Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Patriots director of football research Ernie Adams, and Patriots director of football/head coach administrator Berj Najarian. The loudspeaker announcer introduced Belichick as “the greatest head coach in NFL history,” which understandably also drew a riotous ovation and thunderous applause.
Belichick was joined during the ceremony by fellow banner captain and Special Olympics athlete James Coffey.
New England continued its second week of OTAs Wednesday, with one more practice scheduled for Thursday. They will then break until mandatory minicamp, which is scheduled for June 4-6.
