AFC rivals Tom Brady and Von Miller had the opportunity to spend some time together at the Kentucky Derby – and they may have discovered a friendship.

There’s nothing like gambling, fashion, and a little old-fashioned horse racing to make fast friends of old enemies.

The New England Patriots‘ Tom Brady and the Denver Broncos’ Von Miller weren’t exactly destined to be pals; after all, Brady’s Patriots and Miller’s Broncos have been fierce rivals in the AFC for years now. On top of that, Brady is a quarterback and Miller is a quarterback’s nightmare, one of the most dangerous pass-rushing linebackers in the NFL today.

And yet, at the 145th running of the legendary Kentucky Derby horse race on May 4, these two longtime rivals spent a good amount of quality time together… and they may have even become fast friends in the process.

“It was cool. It’s extremely hard not to like Tom Brady and all of those guys – Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola… being in that environment where you can just chill and it’s not really about football,” Miller told reporters two days after the event.

"“You go to events like the Super Bowl and it’s about this and that. You kind of have this competitive vibe about you. But it’s the Kentucky Derby. You can just sit and really enjoy each other. Just watch the races and just chill with your guys. It was dope to be able to interview Tom Brady and spend time with all of those guys on the Oaks Day and on the Derby Day. It was definitely an experience. I’m a Tom Brady fan unless on Sundays.”"

That last part of the quote is perhaps the most telling: “I’m a Tom Brady fan unless on Sundays.” Miller clearly understands the significance of his sound bytes, and the last thing he presumably wants to do is rile up his hometown Broncos fans by leading them to believe he may take it easy on Brady in the future.

Denver is scheduled to face New England again in 2020, and assuming Miller is still with the Broncos and Brady hasn’t retired by then, the two would be slated to face off once again. Of course, there’s always a chance the teams could meet in the AFC Championship Game this season as well.
