Julian Edelman is recruiting Zion Williamson to play tight end
Julian Edelman cleverly used a photoshopped image on his Twitter account to try and entice Zion Williamson into signing with the Patriots as a tight end.
Even the most casual sports fan probably knows that the New England Patriots are in sore need of a tight end these days. One of the greatest to ever play the position, Rob Gronkowski, called it a career last month after just nine short but incredible years. The Patriots now are tasked with the unenviable job of finding someone who can try and fill Gronk’s gigantic shoes at tight end.
One of Gronkowski’s closest friends on the team, Julian Edelman, took it upon himself on Wednesday to do a little recruiting. Looking in a rather unexpected place, Edelman posted a photoshopped image on Twitter of college basketball breakout star Zion Williamson sandwiched between Robert and Jonathan Kraft, the owner/operators of the team.
In the image, Williamson is holding up a Patriots jersey bearing his surname on the back. Edelman tagged the Duke star in the post directly, stating: “Hey @ZionW32 we’ve got an opening at TE for ya bud. Just sayin.”
Williamson is widely expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, which is due to occur on June 20 in Brooklyn, New York. The draft lottery to determine which team earns that pick is scheduled for May 14, and among the front-runners with the best odds of landing it are the New York Knicks, the Phoenix Suns, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Clemson college coach Dabo Swinney was one of many high-profile figures from the football world to remark on Williamson’s potential as a crossover talent in the gridiron game this past season. And while the 6’7, 285-lb true freshman appears to have found his true calling in hoops, it’s not unrealistic to imagine an athlete of his overall caliber making the switch to another discipline and finding immense success.
After all, analysts have long imagined the possibility of what LeBron James could do as a tight end or receiver in the NFL… why not Williamson as well? Tight ends Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham were both superb basketball stars in their own right before going on to prolific NFL careers.
If Edelman gets his way, perhaps Williamson might be swayed to follow suit? It’s a long shot, but you can’t blame the Super Bowl 53 MVP for trying at least.
