New England quarterback Tom Brady will reportedly forgo the Patriots’ voluntary offseason workout activities next month for the second year in a row.

When you’ve won more Super Bowl championships than any other football player in NFL history, you earn the right to choose which voluntary offseason activities you’ll attend. Such is the case for 41-year-old Tom Brady, who is reportedly set to miss his second straight offseason workout program while he spends more time with his family.

The Patriots quarterback remarkably spent 18 straight years participating in team OTAs until last spring, when he made headlines by announcing he would be staying away from the New England facility and working out on his own. Brady cited family and personal reasons at the time, but many speculated his decision was at least in some part fueled by a reported rift between him and head coach Bill Belichick.

That report was one of many circling about drama and dysfunction within the Patriots organization last offseason; ultimately, whatever issues may have existed at the time weren’t strong enough to derail New England’s season, as the team won a record-tying sixth Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl 53 last February.

New England’s offseason program is scheduled to begin on April 15, just 10 days before the 2019 NFL Draft. This offseason is already shaping up to look dramatically different from most past years, with Brady deciding to stay away, Rob Gronkowski retiring, and a number of prominent players and coaches having left for other teams.

New England also just lost their presumptive defensive coordinator, Greg Schiano, when the former Rutgers coach surprisingly announced his resignation from the team’s coaching staff.

All in all, it’s becoming readily apparent that Belichick has his work cut out for him in trying to reload and reshape this team. Turnover is expected in the NFL – especially for Super Bowl winners and perennial contenders like the Patriots – but this time around, the changes just seem more significant than usual. It will be fascinating to see what kind of team New England looks like come September.
