Rob Gronkowski: Who are his rivals for G.O.A.T. status?
Ozzie Newsome
Younger football fans might only know Ozzie Newsome as the former general manager of the Baltimore Ravens from 2002-2018. Truthfully, as any older or more educated football fan can attest, Newsome was so much more than just a brilliant NFL executive.
As a player, he made a name for himself at the University of Alabama during the late 1970s, eventually going in the first round of the 1978 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns. With the Browns, Newsome went to the Pro Bowl three times, earned First-team All-Pro honors twice, and Second-team All-Pro honors on four separate occasions. He was eventually named a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
Newsome finished his career with 662 receptions for 7,980 yards and 47 touchdowns. Legendary Crimson Tide skipper Bear Bryant called him “a total team player, fine blocker, outstanding leader, great receiver with concentration, speed, hands.” In short, the perfect package.
Historically, Newsome ranks at the very top of the lists for greatest tight ends of all time.
