Martellus Bennett dishes scoop on brother’s new teammates
Ex-Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett took to Instagram to advise his brother Michael on what he should expect from each of his new teammates.
Martellus Bennett might not be coming out of retirement and suiting up for the New England Patriots anytime soon, but that still didn’t stop him from trying to help out the team’s most high-profile new addition.
Just days after it was announced that his brother Michael Bennett would be traded to the Patriots for a fifth-round draft pick next year, Martellus Bennett created a lengthy Instagram post online congratulating his brother on the deal and welcoming him to the Patriot Way.
He started off the message by stating he was “excited to see you do work on the field in front of the best fans in all of sports,” before plunging into a point-by-point letter of advice and analysis on numerous members of the Patriots organization.
First, Bennett cautioned his brother to stay out of head coach Bill Belichick’s way before noting they might have “a lot to discuss as you both love history.” On the offensive side of the ball, he called quarterback Tom Brady “real down to earth,” labeled fullback James Develin “a good dude to talk to about life,” and noted that tight end Rob Gronkowski is “a lot smarter than people think.”
Humorously, he reminisced that he and Brady bonded over “interior decor” and suggested that his brother bond with Brady over international travel. He also predicted that wide receiver and reigning Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman “will probably piss you off one day,” but warned not to “punch him. Lol. He just had one speed and that’s hard.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Bennett called safety Devin McCourty a “hater” (hopefully jokingly) but said that recently re-signed cornerback Jason McCourty was “cool.” He praised safety Duron Harmon for having a “wonderful family,” called safety Patrick Chung “one of the toughest guys,” and suggested that linebacker Dont’a Hightower and his brother would “probably have the most in common on defense in style and demeanor as competitors.”
He didn’t restrict his insights solely to players, either, naming a number of trainers, coaches, nutritionists, and staffers individually as he compiled his full list of advice.
Finally, Bennett concluded by stating once again that he was excited for his brother, before signing off with a signature bit of “Martysaurus Rex” humor: “I know there’s a lot of pressure to come in a city after I’ve left my mark of awesomeness there but just be yourself and they’ll love (you) almost as much as they loved me.”
If Martellus Bennett can’t help the team on the field in 2019, at least his heart’s in the right place by attempting to aid the team’s new starting defensive end in his ongoing transition to Foxborough and the New England Patriots way of life.
