Phillip Dorsett re-signs with the Patriots on one-year deal
Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett is reportedly returning to the New England Patriots on a one-year deal after testing out the waters of free agency.
The New England Patriots got a bit of good news as they closed out the first official day of free agency. After seeing Cordarrelle Patterson bolt to the Chicago Bears on Tuesday night, Phillip Dorsett reportedly agreed to return to the Pats on Wednesday night.
According to the NFL Network’s insider Ian Rapoport, the deal is for one year – essentially amounting to a “prove-it” type situation. The exact financial details of the contract were not immediately available as of this writing.
Dorsett presumably made the rounds with his agent, evaluating his potential fit around the NFL in a variety of offenses. While it’s not yet known whether or not any specific franchises had interest in acquiring his services – and if they did, just what exactly they were willing to give him – it’s clear that Dorsett ultimately decided the best place for him to spend the 2019 season is in Foxborough.
It’s not hard to blame him, either. Fresh off winning a Lombardi Trophy with New England in Super Bowl 53, Dorsett figures to have the opportunity for a more expanded role this coming season, especially with Patterson gone, Josh Gordon still suspended, and Chris Hogan’s status up in the air. If he can make the most of his time playing with the Greatest Quarterback of All Time, he should be in line for a more significant payday this time next year.
Dorsett finished the 2018 season with 32 receptions on 42 targets for 290 yards and three touchdowns. The targets, receptions, and yards were all the second-highest totals in his young four-year career, and the scoring output was actually a career high for him. He also added an additional five catches on eight targets for 70 yards and two touchdowns in the playoffs last season.
The 26-year-old from the University of Miami spent his first two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before playing these past two seasons with the Patriots.
