Julian Edelman and Ellen Degeneres are continuing their support of local Boys & Girls Clubs by auctioning off Edelman’s beard hair to raise money.

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman had himself quite the year.

After missing the first quarter of the 2018 season while serving a surprise PED suspension, Edelman roared back to finish as the team’s leading receiver down the stretch. He came up clutch in back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Then, in what was arguably his finest performance as a Patriot, he secured 10 of 12 targets for 141 yards en route to winning Super Bowl 53 MVP.

Even after the season ended, Edelman has been busy – visiting Disneyworld with Tom Brady, presenting an award at the Grammys, and appearing as a guest on the “Ellen” daytime talk show. While talking with host Ellen Degeneres, the conversation veered to Edelman’s bushy playoff beard, and when he might be ready to shave it off.

Once Degeneres suggested she’d donate $10,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston if Edelman let her be his beard barber, they were off and running to her makeshift set salon. Edelman even volunteered to match her $10,000 donation with one of his own.

Apparently, neither one is done doing good just yet, either. According to NESN’s Dakota Randall, the pair are now auctioning off a bag of genuine beard hair trimmings – to go along with an autographed photo of Edelman as well. Interested bidders have until February 28 to stake their claim, and the minimum bid has already been set at $1,000.

It’s an interesting idea, and one the two celebrities actually briefly discussed while on the air as Edelman prepared to have his lip locks shorn. Most viewers probably assumed they were just joking, but somewhere along the way, someone must have realized they actually had another opportunity in front of them to continue raising money for a great cause.

Now it just remains to be seen how badly some Patriots fan – or some Julian Edelman superfan – wants to take home a bristly, costly souvenir. It’s for the kids, though, so it can’t be that weird… right?
