Jim Harbaugh says it’s time to build a Tom Brady statue at Michigan
Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh declared on his podcast that it was high time a Tom Brady statue get built on Michigan’s campus.
Jim Harbaugh and Tom Brady share a close friendship, mutual respect, and a common love for their alma mater, the University of Michigan. So it makes sense that Harbaugh, head coach of the Wolverines football program, is campaigning now for a statue of Brady to get erected somewhere on campus.
Speaking on his podcast “Attack Each Day,” Harbaugh observed that it was time “for a Tom Brady statue to be built right here” in Ann Arbor.
"“Right in front of Schembechler Hall, or do you put it in the stadium? Where would you put the Tom Brady statue? … The tunnel? Maybe the tunnel? Where do you put it? Maybe some of the listeners can tell us.”"
Brady’s accomplishments are without equal, particularly after his latest triumph in Super Bowl 53. The New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3, earning Brady his sixth Lombardi Trophy. No other player in NFL history has more than five.
Interestingly enough, Brady’s college career at Michigan wasn’t exactly a harbinger of all the greatness he’d go on to achieve as a pro.
He spent his first two years as a backup to Brian Griese, who guided the Wolverines to an undefeated season and a share of the national championship in 1997. Brady finally got his shot to start for Michigan during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, compiling a 20-5 overall record and leading the maize-and-blue to bowl game wins over Arkansas and Alabama, respectively.
While he never won a championship with Michigan as the starting quarterback, he certainly made up for it by winning six as starting quarterback of the Patriots. It’s no wonder Harbaugh wants to commemorate the accomplishments of one of the Wolverines’ favorite sons – and arguably its most prestigious alum.
We’ll have to wait and see what the university has to say about this statue idea.
