The New England Patriots assigned a security detail to keep tabs on Josh Gordon in an attempt to prevent bad behavior, according to sources.

In a new report published Sunday on ESPN, sources revealed the extent the New England Patriots went to trying to protect Josh Gordon from the kind of distractions and temptations that ultimately brought about his latest suspension.

Supposedly, the team designated specific individuals as Gordon’s security detail, instructing them to accompany Gordon “at all times.” The hope was that having such a group in place would prevent Gordon from getting into trouble with the wrong influences and making poor decisions that could jeopardize his career.

Unfortunately, the belief is that Gordon “somehow eluded” that detail during New England’s bye week in mid-November, according to sources. While it’s not yet known what Gordon did exactly to fail this latest drug test and earn an indefinite suspension, the team must have known this might happen one day – especially if their staffers reported his disappearance during the bye week.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and receiver Julian Edelman both took to Instagram on Saturday to send messages of support to their former teammate. Even head coach Bill Belichick, notoriously tight-lipped when speaking to members of the media, used his Friday press conference to wish Gordon “the very best” in overcoming his demons and getting the help he needs.

From a football perspective, New England must continue to pivot in a season filled with challenges and adversity. A number of Patriots players will be tasked with filling the void left by Gordon’s departure.

Whether or not they’re up to that task could determine just how far New England goes in the playoffs.
