New England Patriots: Return of Rex Burkhead makes offense stronger
By Nick Ziegler
In Week 13 against the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots running back, Rex Burkhead, will be making his return. What can he provide?
After a win against the New York Jets, the New England Patriots will be heading back home for a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. In Week 13, the Patriots will have running back, Rex Burkhead, back in action.
Burkhead has been out since Week 3 against the Detroit Lions, as he left that game early. Last season, Burkhead was quietly a big part of the offense for the Patriots. On the ground Burkhead totaled 264 rushing yards and a 4.1 yards per carry average.
In addition to what he was able to do on the ground, Burkhead was equally as good as a receiver, as he totaled 30 receptions and 254 receiving yards. Burkhead’s ability to be both a good runner and a receiver is a very valuable weapon for the Patriots, as he totaled eight touchdowns last season.
Even though he might have been a bit forgotten about with James White and Sony Michel playing so well, Burkhead is a very talented player. Getting Burkhead back at the end of the season will help allow the Patriots to rest Michel and White a bit while having a talented player with fresh legs coming in.
At this point in the season, everyone is a bit banged up and getting a fresh running back will be nice. While the Patriots have had a strong season, they have had some struggles in the red zone. As a dual-threat running back, Burkhead provides the Patriots with a strong option in the red zone.
Even though the Patriots are strong at the running back position, getting Burkhead back only will help the offense and give them another player that can hurt opposing defenses in multiple ways. As we head toward the end of the season and the playoffs, Burkhead will certainly be a player to keep an eye on for the Patriots.
