New England Patriots: Special teams provides big plays in win
By Nick Ziegler
The New England Patriots were able to get a big win on the road against the Chicago Bears. In the win, the special teams came up big.
After a big win against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, the New England Patriots were able to keep their winning ways going.
Going against the Bears, the Patriots were facing a completely different team compared to the Chiefs. While the Chiefs are one of the best offensive teams in the league, the Bears are one of the best defensive teams.
In the win, the Patriots did suffer a notable injury, as running back Sony Michel left the game early with a knee injury. However, without their red-hot running back, the Patriots were able to survive.
Early on in the game on a kickoff return, Cordarrelle Patterson made a big mistake with a fumble. However, Patterson made up for that mistake with his first kickoff return for a touchdown as a member of the Patriots.
Later in the game, the Patriots got another big play from their special teams, as they blocked a punt for a touchdown. Kyle Van Noy was able to pick up the blocked punt and take it to the house, which was a huge play in this game.
Bill Belichick preached improved special teams this week, and despite the slow start, they came through for him. Getting two touchdowns from the special teams is really gravy for the Patriots, as their offense was able to do fairly well against a talented Bears defense.
The two touchdowns that were scored on special teams ended up being the difference in the game, as the Patriots escaped with a 7-point win. This was another very good win for the Patriots on the road, as the Bears are certainly an up-and-coming team in the NFC. While the quest for home-field advantage is a long ways away, getting road wins like this help a lot.
It may not have been a perfect game for the Patriots on special teams, but they made some big plays that proved to be the difference in this one.
