CBS Sports recently released an early 2019 NFL Mock Draft and they had the New England Patriots taking a quarterback.

While the 2019 NFL Draft is still a long ways away for the New England Patriots, it is always important for a franchise to look ahead. So far this season, the Patriots have not gotten off to the start that they would have liked.

Through three games, the Patriots have a 1-2 record, with a loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 3 being a poor one. While injuries have certainly been a factor in their struggles, New England has not looked sharp.

Heading into the 2018 season, there was a lot of speculation that the Patriots would draft the successor to Tom Brady in the NFL Draft. However, the Patriots decided to pass on quarterbacks early on, and took a flyer on Danny Etling in the seventh round. As a seventh-round pick, Etling was certainly not the guy they pictured to replace Brady.

With Brady being another year older, the Patriots will once again be predicted to take a quarterback early on. In a recent CBS Sports Mock Draft, they had the Patriots selecting Oregon quarterback, Justin Herbert, with the 14th overall pick.

While we are still very early on in the scouting process for next years class, Herbert has the Ducks playing very well this season. So far this season, Herbert has totaled 1,186 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns, and has complete 63 percent of his passes.

Even though the Patriots will likely be going after a quarterback in the NFL Draft this coming season, it’s unlikely that they will be picking 14th. The slow start to the season will likely be fixed by New England, as help is on the way for their offense.

Furthermore, even though the Patriots will likely be picking later in the first round, they do have a lot of draft picks at their disposal to move up if they choose to. While Herbert might not be the guy come next year, quarterback is certainly a priority for New England.
