Youth

To have a successful NFL team you need a good blend of youth and veterans. No one has accomplished this quite as well as the Patriots, who are competitive every season because they build their roster masterfully. Coleman gives them a potential young building block at wide receiver.

Right now the two players the Patriots are counting on most at wide receiver are Chris Hogan and Julian Edelman, who are 29 and 32 years old. Bringing in some more youthful players at the position is a smart move by the Patriots, who have added Phillip Dorsett, 25, Cordarrelle Patterson, 27, and Braxton Berrios, 23, the past two offseasons. Fowler is also only 25 himself.

Coleman turned only 24 years old this past July. He is in his third season in the league and he still has plenty of room to grow and develop. There aren’t many better places for a player to develop and grow than New England.

Coleman has reportedly had some attitude problems, but he is still young enough that he can be molded into a better player and person. This is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Patriots given Coleman’s youth and untapped potential. If he isn’t a fit, they can cut him without any problem.
