The New England Patriots could use some help at wide receiver, and one player that makes sense is Golden Tate of the Detroit Lions.

Coming into the 2018 season, the New England Patriots are a bit thin at the wide receiver position. Due to the losses of Brandin Cooks and Danny Amendola along with injuries to other wide receivers, the Patriots could use some help at the position.

For the first four games of the season, the Patriots will be without Julian Edelman, who will be serving his four-game suspension. Especially when Edelman is out, Tom Brady will be relying heavily on Rob Gronkowski and Chris Hogan. Also, the Patriots will be asking Phillip Dorsett and Cordarrelle Patterson to step up at wide receiver.

Recently, Mike Reiss proposed the idea of the Patriots calling up the Detriot Lions about wide receiver, Golden Tate. Here’s what Reiss had to say.

"“I don’t know if the Lions would consider it, but receiver Golden Tate is the type of trade target I’d inquire about for the Patriots. Playing fantasy GM, a package of defensive tackle Malcom Brown and linebacker Elandon Roberts would be something I’d float out there to see if there was a bite. Something tells me Lions fans would tell me I’m not realistic, even though Tate is entering the final year of his contract and the Patriots might have to do some cap maneuvering to bring him on.”"

The idea of going after Tate certainly makes a lot of sense for the Patriots. With Tate being in the final season of his deal and being 30-years-old, the Lions might be opening to listening to a potential deal.

Tate would instantly help the Patriots at wide receiver, as he has been a good receiver in the NFL. Each of the last two seasons, Tate was able to total over 1,000 receiving yards, as the No.1 guy for the Lions.

While it is a purely hypothetical scenario, the Patriots could use some help at the position. If Dorsett and Patterson are unable to produce for New England, the team could be relying heavily on Hogan, Edelman, and Gronkowski. Having another weapon like Tate would not only help the Patriots when Edelman was out, but it would give them some needed talent at the position.

There is nothing official being reported here, but Tate would be an excellent addition for the Patriots. Reiss makes some valid points about why he could be available, and we will have to see if anything comes of this hypothetical scenario.
