New England Patriots: 3 Reasons signing Eric Decker was a good move
By Nick Ziegler
– Lack of talent at WR
One of the main reasons why signing Decker was a good move for the Patriots was because of the question marks at wide receiver. This offseason, the Patriots suffered a couple of big blows at the position. Danny Amendola was lost in free agency to the Miami Dolphins, and Brandin Cooks was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a first round pick.
The return of Julian Edelman was supposed to make the losses mean less, but he will be suspended for the first four games of the season. In addition to the suspension of Edelman, the Patriots also recently released Jordan Matthews and Malcolm Mitchell due to injuries.
To start the season, the Patriots will likely be relying heavily on Chris Hogan and Rob Gronkowski as two key members of the receiving game. If Decker is able to get up to speed quickly, he could play a big role for the Patriots. With the Jets in 2015, Decker was able to over 1,000 receiving yards. Sadly, an injury cost Decker most of his 2017 season.
If Decker is able to perform like he did with the Jets, the Patriots will have gotten a steal. Overall, adding Decker was a very good move for the Patriots, as he is an experienced veteran that should be able to contribute next season.
