New England Patriots trade No. 114 to the Detroit Lions
The New England Patriots completed their sixth trade, and second with the Detroit Lions, of the 2018 NFL Draft.
The New England Patriots have done it again. There aren’t many things that are certain in this world other than death and taxes. However, the Patriots, under Bill Belichick, making trades in the NFL Draft is making a strong case to be the third thing on that list.
For the sixth time in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Patriots have completed a trade. New England made four on Day 2, trading back three times and up once, to select Florida cornerback, Duke Dawson. The trades kept on coming on Day 3.
New England traded their first pick of the day, No. 105, to the Cleveland Browns. That is the third trade this offseason the Patriots and Browns have completed this offseason. The No. 114 selection acquired from the Browns didn’t stay with the Patriots very long.
New England traded the No. 114 pick to the Detroit Lions. It was the second trade the Patriots have completed with the Lions in this draft.
The two organizations know each other, as new Lions head coach Matt Patricia was the defensive coordinator for the Patriots, and Bob Quin, Detroit’s general manager, used to work in the Patriots scouting department.
In exchange for the No. 114 pick, the Patriots picked up a third-round pick in 2019.
The trade was announced on the team’s Twitter account.

This is another excellent trade for New England. For the second time during this draft, the Patriots have added a pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In their trade with the Chicago Bears on Day 2, the Patriots landed Chicago’s 2019 second round pick.
This trade with the Lions recoups the 2019 third round pick that the Patriots sent to the Browns in exchange for Danny Shelton earlier this offseason.
With the No. 114 selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Lions selected Alabama defensive lineman, Da’Shawn Hand. Hand is the second defensive player selected by Patricia after he selected two players on the offensive side of the board to begin the draft.
With these two most recent trades, the Patriots have traded out of the fourth round altogether. They have five selections remaining in this year’s draft, as they are scheduled to pick once in the fifth round, three times in the sixth round and once in the seventh round.

At this point, it is anyone’s guess how many of those picks the Patriots will make. They have made twice as many trades as draft picks in the 2018 NFL Draft thus far.
