New Orleans Saints No. 14: UTSA DE, Marcus Davenport

The New Orleans Saints executed a trade with the Green Bay Packers to move up to the No. 14 spot. New Orleans came up all the way from No. 27, trading the 27th pick, a 2018 fifth round pick and a 2019 first round pick to move up 13 spots.

When the trade was announced, many people assumed it was for a quarterback, possibly Louisville’s Lamar Jackson. The Saints surprised some people, instead, going with UTSA defensive end, Marcus Davenport.

New Orleans defense made major strides last season, as three of their first-round picks were made on that side of the ball. Now, the Saints have another pass rusher to pair with Cameron Jordan.

There is a lot to like about Davenport. He has a rare blend of size and speed, which is combined with a strong work ethic and an excellent motor. While the level of competition wasn’t great, Davenport dominated, racking up 21.5 sacks and 37.5 tackles for loss in his collegiate career.

Davenport is a little raw, but the tools are there for him to become an impact pass rusher. The only thing keeping this grade down is the cost to trade up.It was a high price tag, but if Davenport develops it will be worth it.
