New England Patriots: Fans give team a solid grade for first round
By Nick Ziegler
The New England Patriots entered the first round with two picks and surprisingly didn’t make a trade on Day 1. What grade did fans give them for their two selections in round one?
With two picks in the first round, the New England Patriots had a good opportunity to give their team some young talent in the first round. Due to losses in free agency, the Patriots did have a few needs in the first round.
While many thought at least one of the two first-round picks would have been a defensive player, the Patriots instead went with two offensive players from Georgia. With the 23rd overall pick, the Patriots were able to bolster their line with the selection of Isaiah Wynn.
As both a guard and a tackle at Georgia, Wynn brings versatility to the Patriots, but he was likely brought in to compete for the left tackle spot. Since LaAdrian Waddle and Antonio Garcia are question marks at left tackle, Wynn gives the Patriots another player to compete for the spot. As always, competition can bring out the best in the player.
With the 31st pick in the draft, the Patriots made somewhat of a surprising pick with the selection of Sony Michel. Even though the Patriots did lose Dion Lewis in free agency, there wasn’t a lot of talk about the Patriots looking at a running back this early in the draft. As part of a duo with Nick Chubb at Georgia, Michel had a very strong season and is a big play threat.
After the draft, we asked fans what grade they gave the Patriots for their first round. Here were the results.
As you can see, the results were pretty good for the Patriots with 59 percent giving the Patriots a first-round grade of a B. Also, not too many believed that the Patriots had a poor first day, as only 11 percent gave them a D grade.
