NE No.31: Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph

After selecting cornerback Mike Hughes with the 23rd overall pick, the Patriots will be on the clock once again with the 31st overall pick. The addition of Hughes addressed one of the needs for the Patriots on the defensive side of the ball, and they will be using the 31st overall pick to look toward the future.

Due to trade that sent Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers, the Patriots have a need for a young quarterback to groom for when Tom Brady decides to hang it up. With the 31st overall pick, the Patriots will be taking quarterback Mason Rudolph to groom as their next quarterback.

With Tom Brady still playing at an extremely high level, Rudolph will have time to grow and learn. Being selected by the Patriots is certainly an ideal situation for Rudolph, as he might not have to play for a few years. Since Rudolph is coming from the spread system at Oklahoma State, he will have to learn a pro-style offense with the Patriots, and that can take some time. By taking a quarterback in the first round, it will give the Patriots another year of control, which could be important down the road.
