NE No.23: UCF CB Mike Hughes

After a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, the New England Patriots will be on the clock with their first of two first-round draft picks. In the trade with the Rams, the Patriots sent wide receiver Brandin Cooks to Los Angeles. Even though they lost a 1000-yard receiver, don’t expect to see the Patriots drafting a wide receiver with Julian Edelman coming back next season and a lot of depth at the position.

The Patriots have a few needs in the draft, and one of them is at cornerback. With the 23rd pick, the Patriots will be taking cornerback Mike Hughes from UCF. At UCF last season, Hughes was able to total four interceptions, as he was a great playmaker on the defensive side of the ball.

With the benching of Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl, it became clear that the Patriots lacked depth at cornerback, and the Eagles were able to expose that. This offseason, the Patriots did acquire Jason McCourty, but they could certainly use some more help at cornerback. By selecting Hughes, the Patriots will add some depth to their secondary and address one of their needs in the NFL Draft.
