New England Patriots: Full 2018 first round NFL mock draft
DET No. 20 Overall Pick: South Dakota St. TE, Dallas Goedert
The Detroit Lions moved on from 2014 first round draft pick Eric Ebron this offseason. They added Levine Toilolo and Luke Wilson in free agency to help fill the void. Both are regarded more as blocking tight ends, while Ebron was more of a pass catcher.
Without a pass-catching tight end threat on the roster, we have the Lions selecting South Dakota State tight end, Dallas Goedert. This is a selection that will make franchise quarterback, Matthew Stafford, very happy.
Goedert is from a smaller college but is arguably the best tight end prospect in this year’s class. There is a lot to like when evaluating him. He caught 198 passes in his collegiate career, averaging 15.1 yards per catch and scoring 21 touchdowns. His height, weight and speed combination is considered to be exceptional.
What makes Goedert such a good prospect is that he is also a willing blocker. That will help him get on the field right away, as the tight end is one of the toughest positions for a player to make the transition from the NCAA to the NFL.
Goedert had graded out as above average across the board and makes for a good get here for Detroit. He could develop into their long-term option at the position, which Ebron failed to do.
