Patriots Rumors: Orleans Darkwa meets with New England
By Nick Ziegler
Recent Patriots rumors are that they have recently hosted a free agent meeting with running back Orleans Darkwa.
Even though free agency has calmed down a bit, there are still Patriots rumors, as they look to add players to their roster heading into the draft. One of the positions that the Patriots will be looking to add some players is at running back.
This offseason, the Patriots saw Dion Lewis leave in free agency, as the Tennessee Titans signed him away from the Patriots. As one of the best running backs available in free agency, it wasn’t too surprising to see him sign a lucrative contract elsewhere.
Lewis was a big part of the Patriots’ offense last season, as he was their leading rusher by far. At the end of the season, Lewis proved that he could be a three-down back, as injuries resulted in the Patriots relying on him heavily.
So far this offseason, the Patriots were able to re-sign Rex Burkhead, but they will surely be looking to add some more depth in their backfield. As of now, it is really only Burkhead and Mike Gillislee as primary runners for New England with James White being more of just a receiver out of the backfield.
According to Ian Rapoport, the Patriots have recently met with running back Orleans Darkwa.
Darkwa was not drafted coming out of college, but he has been able to make it in the NFL. Last season, Darkwa had a career-year, as he totaled 751 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. Considering that the Giants did not have a very good offense last season, Darkwa’s good season is even more impressive. However, with new leadership, he has yet to be brought back.
With a need for some depth at the running back position, Darkwa would be a nice pickup for the Patriots. With no clear-cut lead back, the Patriots will likely be using some sort of committee in their backfield next season. After his meeting, we will have to see if Darkwa signs with New England.
