New England Patriots Rumors: Head coach Bill Belichick could have interest in the New York Giants head coaching vacancy if he forces his way out of New England.

Recent New England Patriots rumors have revolved around head coaching vacancies in the league. When you are as successful as the Patriots are, other teams will always come knocking looking to poach from your coaching staff. For the Patriots, this seems to be a yearly event.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia are both popular candidates to move into head coaching roles. They have both proven to excel in their coordinator roles and have earned a shot to lead their own teams.

The Patriots have been prepping for their departures. We have already heard that Patricia is destined to leave the Patriots. While the coordinator departures were partly expected, did anyone expect that Bill Belichick could be leaving the Patriots sideline?

Earlier this week, Seth Wickersham of ESPN wrote a featured piece detailing the Patriots crumbling infrastructure. Wickersham’s piece details that there is cracks in the Belichick-Tom Brady-Robert Kraft relationship, and it began with Brady’s trainer and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Wickersham details the book that Tom Brady helped write with Alex Guerrero, his trainer. It rubbed some people the wrong way within the Patriots organization according to Wickersham. Guerrero was overstepping his bounds according to Wickersham, and it was creating a rift with Belichick.

The trade of Garoppolo is something that also created tension according to Wickersham. Belichick did not want to trade Garoppolo, but Brady and Kraft had other plans. Kraft and Belichick eventually held a meeting, which resulted in the mandate to trade Garoppolo.

It is a move that made Belichick furious according to Wickersham. However, as he has done throughout the past two decades, Belichick put his ego aside for what was thought to be best for the team.

Wickersham noted that Belichick’s philosophy including that once an owner gets involved, it is time to move on. Could that time be now? With the Patriots dynasty seemingly crumbling according to Wickersham, Belichick could leave town. Coincidentally, the one place that Belichick wants to coach has an opening.

According to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News, Belichick could find his way to the New York Giants sideline.

"“I’m sure Bill knows this is his last chance to be the Giants coach,” a source close to Belichick said Friday. “Bill sees an opening — an opening to get to the Giants.”"

Now that is some big news. While the source notes that the reported friction may not prompt Belichick to want to leave, he did say, with certainty, that the Giants are the only place he would want to be.

There would be a lot of moving parts to such a move, starting with Belichick actually wanting to leave New England. The source takes it a step further offering more insight to the situation.

"“He wants to be the Giants coach. I know that for a fact,” the source said. “That would be pretty cool. My guess is if he wants out, the Giants already know. He would be great with Gettleman. Bill is a football guy. Gettleman is a football guy.”"

These quotes do come with a grain of salt. The source has not spoken to Belichick since the Wickersham story came out, but he is very familiar with Belichick according to Myers.

If the situation between Belichick, Kraft and Brady is as bad as Wickersham makes it out to be, drastic changes could be on the way. It is a decision the Patriots would have to figure out soon, as McDaniels figures to be the next head coach if Belichick leaves.

However, what if McDaniels agrees to become the coach somewhere else. If he leaves, and then Belichick departs as well, the Patriots would be facing quite a predicament.

For the Giants, they may not be able to play the waiting game for Belichick. If they wait and Belichick does not become available, they could be left out in the dust in the head coaching arms race.

This is definitely a situation to keep an eye on. Multiple franchises could see major upheavel this offseason if the Belichick-Kraft-Brady trio are broken up.
