New England Patriots News: Right tackle Marcus Cannon has been placed on season-ending IR with an ankle injury.

In recent New England Patriots news, another player will be added to the IR. The Patriots already have plenty of important players on IR. Wide receiver Julian Edelman was placed on IR prior to the season beginning. Linebacker Dont’a Hightower was added after injuring his shoulder again.

This week, they are going to be joined by starting right tackle, Marcus Cannon. Cannon will be placed on the season-ending IR because of an ankle injury. ESPN’s Mike Reiss shared the news.

Cannon has been sidelined since October 29th. In the Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, Cannon injured his ankle and has been sidelined since. Cannon was in a walking boot following the game and has been ever since.

According to Reiss, this is the second consecutive season that Cannon has dealt with an ankle injury. He played through it in 2016, but this time around it was too much to overcome. Reiss added that it is likely Cannon undergoes surgery with hopes that he will have a clean bill of health going into the 2018 season.

Cannon was signed to a long-term deal back in 2016, as the Patriots paid him lavishly. Cannon and the Patriots agreed to a five-year, $32.5 million deal. Last season he was voted to the Associated Press second-team All-Pro.

Losing Cannon is a big loss for the Patriots. However, it is an area of strength for the team. Earlier in the year, head coach Bill Belichick spoke about how the Patriots were lucky to have depth at tackle. Behind Cannon, the Patriots have LaAdrian Waddle and Cameron Fleming, two players who have helped out and stepped into the lineup already this season.

With Cannon being placed on IR, the Patriots made some roster moves. Earlier in the week, veteran wide receiver Kenny Britt was signed to a two-year deal. In addition to Britt, the Patriots also brought back veteran Ricky Jean-Francois, who appeared in three games for the team earlier in the season before being released.

In addition to those signings, and Rob Gronkowski being reinstated after his suspension, the Patriots had to release some players. Linebacker Jonathan Feeny and punt returner Bernard Reedy were the two players let go.
