Recent Patriots rumors have emerged about their interest in free agent quarterback Brian Hoyer to become the new backup in New England.

With the NFL trade deadline nearly here, there have been plenty of Patriots rumors. While many expected that the Patriots would be active at the trade deadline, it was very surprising to see them trade their backup quarterback.

The Patriots decided to trade Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a second-round pick. Since the 49ers are one of the worst teams in the NFL, this will likely be a very early pick in the second round.

New England likely made the decision to trade Garoppolo because of their belief that Tom Brady will be able to continue to play at a high level for years to come. While this might be the case, the Patriots will still need a backup.

Right after the 49ers acquired Garoppolo, they decided to release Brian Hoyer. According to Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are interested in Hoyer to be the backup.

It seems like this is a perfect match for both Hoyer and New England. With the Patriots being one a bye week, Hoyer will be able to catch up to speed on the offense. While coming to a new team during the season is never easy, Hoyer has been on the Patriots and is familiar with their system.

Even though Hoyer hasn’t had a ton of success as a starter in the NFL, he would be a very good backup for Brady. This season Hoyer has totaled 1,245 passing yards, four touchdown passes and four interceptions in six games.

With limited options available in free agency, Hoyer certainly makes the most sense for New England right now. New England run a pretty complex offense that takes time to learn and trading and Hoyer’s experience in the system should make him the front-runner for the job.
