The New England Patriots were able to pick up their fourth straight victory on Sunday. Despite being banged up, the defense rose to the occasion once again.

Coming into Week 8, the New England Patriots had a tough game on their hands against the Los Angeles Chargers. Like the Patriots, the Chargers came into Week 8 with a three-game winning streak of their own.

This was the classic matchup of something had to give, and it was the Patriots who ended up victorious. The 21-13 win could have been more for the Patriots but the offense stalled on drives a few times and they also missed two field goals. However, in a somewhat sloppy day in New England, it was enough to get the win.

Despite being very banged up on the defensive side of the ball, it was that unit that was very impressive once again. Things started out poorly for the Patriots, as they allowed a monster run to Melvin Gordon early in the game. However, they didn’t let that rattle their confidence.

After allowing the big run in the first quarter, the Patriots went on to shutout the Chargers in the second and third quarters. This allowed the offense to build a lead to take into the fourth quarter, where the Patriots would eventually emerge with a win.

Considering that the Patriots were without Stephon Gilmore, Eric Rowe, Malcom Brown, and Dont’a Hightower, holding the Chargers to just 13 points was a great accomplishment. This is the second straight week that the Patriots’ defense has come up big against a talented offense, and they have appeared to have turned the corner.

The offense is certainly helping the defense out by committing to running the football a bit more. This helps keep the defense fresh, as they aren’t being overworked after quick scores by the offense.

The bye week certainly comes at a good time for the Patriots, as they have moved to 6-2 on the season. Hopefully, the extra week off with help get guys like Gilmore and Rowe healthy for the Patriots. With a few tough games coming up, getting healthy will be important for New England.
