Dwayne Allen

For the second week in a row, Dwayne Allen lands on the loser list for the Patriots. Last week he was unable to make an impact despite Rob Gronkowski being sidelined. This week, Gronkowski returned so his role was expected to diminish, but it hit a new low against the Jets.

With Gronkowski not limited at all, Allen’s plays were going to diminish. He has yet to establish himself as a receiving threat, so his playing time is limited. However, the Patriots did use some multiple tight end sets to block, but he wasn’t even on the field for some of that.

Offensive lineman Nate Solder lined up at tight end on four occasions, further diminishing Allen’s already nonexistent role. Combined with James Devlin’s uptick in snaps, Allen looks like he will be lucky to get on the field at all in the coming weeks.

Some people got excited about Allen’s outlook when the Patriots acquired him from the Indianapolis Colts. New England has thrived in the past with multiple tight ends, even as early as last season with Martellus Bennett joining Gronkowski. However, Allen has found no success and does not look to have a set role with the team.
