When the New England Patriots take on the Saints in New Orleans this Sunday, they will be without linebacker Dont’a Hightower and receiver Danny Amendola.

Against the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots suffered a tough break when Dont’a Hightower was injured in the third quarter. It was reported that he suffered a minor sprain to his MCL. In addition to the injury to Hightower, Danny Amendola also suffered injuries in the Thursday night opener. He was officially in concussion protocol while also being listed with a knee injury.

Without Hightower, the front seven of the Patriots defense could struggle mightily. Drew Brees and the Saints could target pass-catching back Alvin Kamara out of the backfield against the Patriots’ slow backup linebackers.

Rebounding from a 42-27 loss where the defense surrounded 537 yards will be increasingly difficult without the defensive signal caller. The 537 yards are the fourth-most given up in franchise history, and most ever under Bill Belichick. Elandon Roberts, David Harris and Marquis Flowers could see an increase in snaps as Hightower is out.

Jordan Richards is another name to watch who would bring more speed and versatility to the linebacking core. Harvey Langi (concussion) was also removed from the injury report and could be in line to make his NFL debut.

As for Amendola, Brady will be left with just Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan and Phillip Dorsett as receivers. Amendola (six catches for 100 yards) provided a valuable replacement for Julian Edelman in week one. However after his injury, the offense stalled and did not look good.

Amendola will be easier to replace than Hightower. Other than the three receivers, the backfield remains crowded. Rex Burkhead and Dion Lewis could see increased snaps out of the slot. Jacob Hollister, the teams third tight end, could also make his NFL debut and provide value as a pass-catcher.

If the Patriots weren’t comfortable entering Sunday with just three receivers, Demarcus Ayers could be called up off the practice squad. Ayers, in his second season, has just six career receptions for 53 yards and one score.

Along with Hightower and Amendola, six-time pro bowler Matthew Slater (hamstring) has also been ruled out. Defensive tackle Vincent Valentine (knee) will also miss his second straight game.
