New England Patriots Digest: Things to watch in training camp
How many cornerbacks will make New England’s roster?
As it stands, three cornerbacks appear as virtual locks to make the Patriots roster: Stephon Gilmore, Malcolm Butler, and Eric Rowe. The bottom half of the depth chart is much less clear. Justin Coleman, Jonathan Jones, and Cyrus Jones will all compete for the fourth and possibly fifth cornerback spots.
Jonathan Jones was the biggest contributor out of the three, serving as a core special teamer and playing all 16 games last season. Coleman has the most experience out of the group, having played two seasons with New England. He’s also earned the most starts with three nods in 20 games. The Patriots have invested the most in Cyrus Jones, selecting him with the 60th overall pick in the 2016 draft.
The cornerback position was one of the camp battles noted in Musket Fire’s ‘4 position battles to watch in camp‘. It will be an exciting group to monitor throughout the remainder of the summer.
