Patriots Rumors: Roger Goodell still upset with New England
By Nick Ziegler
Recent Patriots rumors have been about NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, being upset with the team over a t-shirt worn by Matt Patricia.
While there haven’t been many Patriots rumors about roster moves in the summer months, there have been some rumors about their relationship with the Commissioner.
The long feud between Roger Goodell and the New England Patriots has been well-documented. To start the 2016 season, the Patriots were without quarterback Tom Brady because he was suspended for four games by Goodell for DeflateGate. These actions by Goodell resulted in him because in him becoming public enemy No.1 in New England.
Despite Brady being suspended, the Patriots were able to have the best record in the AFC and eventually won the Super Bowl. On the way back from the game, Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was seen wearing a ‘Goodell is a clown’ t-shirt from Barstool Sports. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Goodell is still not happy about that.
"Per a league source, the Commissioner continues to be miffed about Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia’s decision to wear the Barstool Sports Goodell-with-a-clown-nose T-shirt while disembarking from the plane that brought the team back from Super Bowl LI. The question of whether Goodell should or shouldn’t still be upset isn’t relevant; he is. And the broader question will be whether teams looking for head coaches will take a dimmer view of Patricia because of it."
Since the Patriots won the Super Bowl, the Commissioner is almost forced to be in New England for the start of the season. In Week 1, the Patriots will be hosting the Kansas City Chiefs to start the season with Goodell likely in attendance. However, this new wrinkle about Goodell being upset with Patricia about the t-shirt will likely just add fuel to the fire.
Next: Pre-Camp Roster Predictions
As one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL last season, Patricia could be up for some head coaching jobs next season. With some drama with the Commissioner, Patricia might find some teams that are unwilling to take a chance on some that can put a bullseye on their back. With Week 1 just a couple months away, it will be interesting to see how the Commissioner is welcomed in New England.
