New England Patriots Roster Recap: Wide Receiver
Brandin Cooks, age 23
Trading for wide receiver Brandin Cooks was the cornerstone of New England’s offseason dealings.
The 2014 first round pick played three seasons in New Orleans where he tallied 2,861 yards and twenty touchdowns on 215 catches. Last season, Cooks had 78 catches, 1,173 yards, and eight touchdowns, including two touchdowns and 143 yards against the Oakland Raiders.
According to MockDraftable.com, Cooks’ measurables compare heavily with former Patriot receiver, Deion Branch.
The most intriguing aspect of Cooks’ game is his deep threat ability. His 4.33 speed will be a nightmare for defenders playing press coverage. In 2016, Cooks had 98-yard, 87-yard, and 65-yard touchdowns.
New England exercised the fifth-year option on Cooks’ rookie deal meaning he’ll be under contract until at least 2018.
Cooks has the speed to play outside along with the size to play the slot. He and Edelman will share starting duties throughout the season, occasionally subbing out for Chris Hogan or Malcolm Mitchell.
