New England Patriots Roster Recap: Tight Ends
Matt Lengel, age 26
Matt Lengel finished last season as the second-string tight end on the Patriots’ Super Bowl LI roster.
After going undrafted in the 2015 draft, Lengel spent his rookie season on Cincinnati’s practice squad. He began the 2016 season with the Bengals until he was plucked from their practice squad by the Patriots last November.
Lengel played in nine games for New England in 2016, he had two catches for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Over the summer, Lengel will compete with James O’Shaughnessy and Jacob Hollister for the third tight end spot on New England’s depth chart. Two advantages Lengel has over O’Shaughnessy and Hollister are his height (6’7″) and experience in the Patriots system.
Given the injury history of both Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen, New England will need to have a viable replacement at the third tight end spot.
