In this edition of the New England Patriots Roster Recap series, we get to know the Patriots tight end group.

As usual, a new season means a new face behind New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. Last year it was Martellus Bennett, in 2015, Scott Chandler, and this season, Dwayne Allen.

The New England Patriots will head into OTAs with five tight ends on the roster. According to Spotrac.com, the team has allotted $13.3 million to the position in 2017, 9.08% of their salary cap. Not including Sam Cotton. The Patriots spent $12.04 million on the position last season, 8.15% of their 2016 cap.

In 2016, New England’s tight end corps combined for 82 catches, 1,263 yards, and eleven touchdowns. A majority of the production came from recently departed tight end Martellus Bennett. Bennett served as a premium back-up for the Patriots after Rob Gronkowski was placed on season-ending IR midway through the season.

Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen should be considered locks to make the 53-man roster while second-year Patriot Matt Lengel, former-Chief James O’Shaughnessy, and undrafted free agent signee Jacob Hollister will likely compete for the third tight end spot.

Will New England’s updated tight end corps make up for losing Martellus Bennett in free agency? Let’s see how the group stacks up.
