The Patriots continue to add to the defensive line, this time with a small-school stud.

Basham played four seasons at the University of Ohio, tallying 27 sacks, 152 tackles, 38.5 tackles for loss, and 5 forced fumbles. In 2016, he was awarded MAC Defensive Player of the Year posting 9 sacks, 49 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.

NFLDraftScout.com’s Dane Brugler said the following about Basham after this year’s Senior Bowl:

"“Talking to scouts throughout the season, Basham was viewed as a possible top-100 draft pick. After his strong finish to the season and impressive week in Mobile, the better question is whether or not he belongs in the top 50. Basham was routinely dominant in one-on-one drills, using his combination of initial burst and power to penetrate the pocket.” (1/31/2017)"

Athlon Sports 2017 NFL Draft Preview’s summary of Basham writes:

"“While Basham might need a year or two to adjust to the NFL, his quickness and overall athleticism should make him a quality edge player with a chance to become a long-term starter.” (Page 105)"

With the addition of Wormley earlier on, New England would have a full stable of defensive ends and finding a role for Basham could be difficult. The Patriots could sit Basham as a rookie and develop him over the 2017 season like Trey Flowers in 2015.
