Recent New England Patriots rumors have been about who they will be playing to open up the 2017 season.

With the NFL Draft quickly approaching, there have been plenty of New England Patriots rumors. While the Patriots’ draft plan isn’t certain yet, it does appear like they know who they will be opening the season against.

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, the Patriots will be opening the season against the Kansas City Chiefs.

"The Patriots’ opening game on Sept. 7 at Gillette Stadium will almost certainly be against the Chiefs, who are coming off a 12-4 season and an AFC West title. A rematch with the Falcons was an option, but they are likely to open the season at home on “Sunday Night Football” to debut their new stadium."

Due to the Patriots playing the Atlanta Falcons in the regular season, having a Super Bowl rematch certainly could have been a possibility. Last season, the Denver Broncos the Carolina Panthers to open the season.

As Volin mentions, the Falcons are opening up their new stadium, which usually warrants them playing a primetime game.

For the Patriots, playing the Kansas City Chiefs will be a good early test in the season. For the past few years, the Chiefs have been one of the best teams in the AFC and were the AFC West Champions in 2016.

The game against the Chiefs will present a challenge to the Patriots’ high-powered offense. Kansas City should once again have one of the best defenses in the NFL. This offseason, the Patriots’ offense got better with the addition of wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Against a good defense like the Chiefs, having Cooks will certainly help.
