New England Patriots rookie Cyrus Jones had a rough rookie season. It became so bad that he didn’t even want to play anymore.

The New England Patriots are historically one of the best teams in the NFL in the NFL Draft. Almost every year, the Patriots make a great mid to late round draft pick. Their ability to draft and develop young talent is one of the reasons why they have been so successful for the past 15 years.

Despite success in the draft, second round pick Cyrus Jones had a horrible rookie season for the Patriots. As a returner and a cornerback, Jones’ struggles resulted in him playing in just 10 games for the Patriots. One of his major issues was holding onto the ball on returns.

Even though Jones received a ring with the Patriots this season, he didn’t feel like he contributed to it. In a recent interview with Childs Walker of the Baltimore Sun, Jones opened up about his rookie season.

"“I’ll never take credit for something I don’t feel I contributed to,” the former Gilman star said this week. “I was part of the team, but I didn’t feel a part of it.” “I honestly felt cursed,” he said to Walker. “I reached a point where I didn’t even want to play. I just didn’t have it.”"

Next season, Jones might have an important role on the Patriots’ defense. Due to the Patriots having multiple members of their secondary as free agents, Jones might be forced into a major role. After the poor rookie season, Jones is focused on bouncing back.

"“What I did this year was not me,” he said to Walker. “I don’t care how anybody tries to sugarcoat it. Yes, I was a rookie. But I feel I should always be one of the best players on the field, no matter where I am.”But honestly, it was hell for me,” he said to Walker. “That’s the only way I can describe it. I didn’t feel I deserved to be part of anything that was happening with the team. I felt embarrassed that these people probably thought they wasted a pick on me.”"

This will be a very important offseason for Jones. With a need for improvement, Jones must perform better for the Patriots in 2017. If he doesn’t, he could end up being on the chopping block.
