CB Malcolm Butler – entering a contract year, Butler looks to show the league he’s truly an elite No. 1 corner.

CB Logan Ryan – the most impressive defensive back in the preseason for the Pats, Ryan is primed for a big year himself. Like Butler, Ryan is in a contract year.

CB Cyrus Jones – been a roster lock since his second round drafting this spring, also will contribute on special teams as an electric punt returner.

CB Justin Coleman – the best No. 3 corner for the Pats last year will assume those duties once again in 2016. He did great in deep coverage against the Giants on Thursday.

CB Cre’Von LeBlanc – pushes out fellow undrafted rookie Jonathan Jones and sophomore pro Darryl Roberts for the highly-contested No. 5 job.

6 dark horse candidates to make final Patriots roster

FS Devin McCourty – top-five free safety in the league.

FS Duron Harmon – a decent backup for McCourty with excellent center field ability when it comes to intercepting overthrown passes.

SS Patrick Chung – strong in run defense and getting better in coverage.

SS Jordan Richards – salvaged an up-and-down preseason with a nice interception on Thursday night.
