SAFETY

1. Devin McCourty

2. Patrick Chung

3. Duron Harmon

4. Jordan Richards

Although he struggled in Friday night’s preseason game, Richards projects as the last safety on the Patriots depth chart. Hopefully, the Stanford product is up to the job of fill-in duty should any of the starters get hurt over the course of the season. Harmon will act as the immediate backup for either McCourty or Chung; he possesses decent range and has shown a knack for picking off errant deep passes.

3 ripple effects of Pats trading for Barkevious Mingo

As for McCourty and Chung, the Patriots are fortunate to have one of the NFL’s best safety duos. Thanks to McCourty’s outstanding span of coverage in the back end, the Patriots can shift Chung closer to the line of scrimmage for run defense purposes.

As you see below, former Saints safety Sunseri gets the chop, as does Thompson.

Cut: Vinnie Sunseri, Cedric Thompson
