1. No one else has distinguished themselves.

It sure would make cutting Dobson a whole lot easier if Keshawn Martin, Chris Harper, DeAndre Carter or Devin Lucien forced the Patriots’ hand, but since none of those guys has been overly impressive this preseason, Dobson’s path to the final roster is more or less paved at this point. The release of Nate Washington the other day further strengthens that point.

Furthermore, if Dobson makes the team as the final wideout behind Edelman, Amendola, Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell, you would be hard-pressed to find a more talented and experienced No. 5 wideout in the NFL. Having Dobson buried on the depth chart would give the Patriots the luxury of options; if Mitchell’s elbow isn’t ready to go for Week 1, in goes Dobson. If Amendola continues to struggle with healthy by the time September rolls around, in goes Dobson.

So there you have it. Dobson looks primed to make the final roster for the fourth year in a row on account of his tall stature, years of experience with the Patriots and by virtue of the fact that no roster hopeful has particularly outshined the Marshall product.
