Running backs (5): Tyler Gaffney, Donald Brown, D.J. Foster, Joey Iosefa, James Devlin

Cut: Dion Lewis, LeGarrette Blount, James White, Brandon Bolden

Yikes. This would be a terrible running back group to bring into the regular season.

Brown and Foster have both been dealing with injuries; Brown isn’t the same player he was with Indianapolis Colts a few years ago, and Foster is largely unproven having been sidelined for much of training camp. Neither have appeared in 11-on-11 scrimmages this summer.

As for Gaffney, he would be the No. 1 running back in this depth chart. Iosefa, although promising, is not who you want starting the season as the primary power back. Luckily, there’s a fifth spot open for Develin, who could at least snowplow for this undermanned backfield.

Meanwhile, the Patriots cut spark plugs Lewis and White as well as dependable straight-line runner Blount. Oh, and they lose Bolden’s versatility as a special teamer and fill-in back.
