Training camp is just around the corner, and yesterday the Patriots officially announced who would begin camp on the PUP (physically-unable-to-perform list)…

From Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston:

"New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis, who is recovering from a torn ACL from last November, is one of seven players the club placed on the active/physically-unable-to-perform list on Monday. In addition to Lewis, wide receivers Julian Edelman (left foot) and Danny Amendola (knee/ankle), tight end Clay Harbor (unknown), guards Tre’ Jackson (knee) and Shaq Mason (unknown), and offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer (unknown) were placed on the active/PUP list.Players on the active/PUP list can be removed at any time. Their status essentially means they aren’t cleared for practice at this time."

As Reiss said, being placed on this list simply means the player can’t practice at this current time. By no means at all does this mean these guys will miss any time at the beginning of the season.

In fact, Dion Lewis was practicing at the end of mini-camp earlier in the summer, and Julian Edelman was recently seen running around quite smoothly at Fenway Park before a Red Sox game. I think both of those two will at the very least be ready to go for the season opener in Arizona, if not earlier than that.

We don’t know as much regarding the status of the other five guys, but hopefully they get the necessary rest and rehab they need over the next month or so because they will be needed come September. Amendola is set to be one of Tom Brady’s top pass catchers this year, and Jackson, Mason and Vollmer will all be hugely important pieces along that offensive line.

But again, this is not something to worry about. This just means these guys aren’t quite ready to practice. I think they’ll all be good to go for the regular season.
