In case you weren’t aware, New England Patriots draft pick Malcolm Mitchell was named Georgia’s Children’s Author of the Year after publishing “The Magician’s Hat”. Mitchell isn’t stopping there.

His youth literacy initiative, Read with Malcolm, is collaborating with Learning Ally to help promote children’s reading over the summer so they don’t start the school year rusty in the books.

Learning Ally provides reading and learning solutions for those affected by dyslexia, blindness or visual impairment and a host of other disabilities. According to Learning Ally, Mitchell will assist and encourage participation in the organization’s sports-themed “Ready, set, read!” program this summer

8 most essential players on Patriots’ roster.

Research indicates that a summer without reading translates into a rough start to the school year. It’s great to see Mitchell working with children in even worse-off learning situations to “bridge the gap” so that these children are just as prepared to hit the ground running in late August when classes begin.

And here’s a statement from Mitchell:

"Dyslexia affects 8.5 million students in the U.S. – that’s every one in five students. These students should have a chance to read just like every other kid. Learning Ally gives these kids a great opportunity to read.Just like football, reading takes a lot of practice, and I think it’s important that kids read 20 minutes a day outside the classroom, especially striving readers.  I hope everyone will enjoy participating in Learning Ally’s #SRT16 program and finish the summer strong to get ready to head back to school.I can’t wait to see all the great pictures and hear stories of how kids are reading differently.  Keep Reading!"

Mitchell celebrated National Summer Learning Day yesterday by recording his “The Magician’s Hat” in a Learning Ally studio.

10 most promising sophomore pros on Patriots’ roster

Without a doubt, Mitchell is a class act on and off the field. The Patriots are fortunate to have such a dedicated prospect joining their ranks this summer. Hopefully, Mitchell proves himself in the heat of battle during training camp and makes the team. Stardom is a great platform to promote youth literacy.
