8. Jordan Richards

What makes him promising: Richards managed to get up to speed in the Patriots’ system despite the fact that he missed rookie minicamp and OTAs due to Stanford’s late graduation date. Yes, he only appeared in 21.8 percent of defensive snaps, but Richards proved his work ethic and made contributions on special teams.

Training camp competition: To remain relevant on the Patriots’ roster, Richards must first and foremost display his special teams ability. There are no shortage of rookies with special teams promise (Kamu Grugier-Hill, for one) as well as rookies with special teams track records (Ramon Humber).

3 sources of worry on Patriots roster

2016 expectations: Richards will be expected to fend off newcoming special teams talent while also claiming the top backup spot behind Patrick Chung. No. 37 is a physical player despite his relatively small stature, and he will need to pack a punch in training camp to reach this expectation.

Optimistic 2016 forecast: Top-tier special teamer in all 16 games and an excellent fill-in if and when Chung gets injured.
