For Patriots fans, late June marks a time to take a breath from fandom.

It’s June. Football is hardly the first thought that comes across even the most die-hard New England Patriots fan at this time of year. The barbecues are frequent, the water is refreshing and the sun puts bad memories of the 2015 AFC Championship Game far out of mind. It’s time to set football aside, if only for a second.

At this juncture of the calendar, the draft is in the rear-view mirror. Free agency was long enough ago that we’ve had plenty of time to dream about Martellus Bennett and Rob Gronkowski on the same field. The offseason feels like it’s dragging on, yet the onset of real football (if you call training camp “real football”) is still over a month away. So what does the 24th day in June mean for Patriots fans?

It means it’s time to take a breath. Fandom is a sport of itself, and it’s more of a marathon than a sprint. Fans like us, especially fans of arguably the most scrutinized team in the NFL, have to relax in the summer sun. There isn’t any pressing Patriots news at the moment, no injury scares to lose sleep over, no major scandals knocking at the door.

So just sip your iced beverage in the sun and rest easy knowing that you are a fan of the best team in the NFL. Know that you have at least one more season (hopefully two or three more) of watching the best quarterback in the history of the sport work his magic on Sundays. Know that the fall will bring excitement, and also know that it will test your heart’s health as most Patriots games often do.

It’s June, for crying out loud. Grab your fishing pole and head to the lake. Get off work early and enjoy an ice cream cone with your kid. Remember that in the end, this is all for fun. And right now, there are plenty of other fun things to do.
