3. Increased likelihood of a rookie making the team

Although still certainly longshots to make the final roster, sixth round selections Kamu Grugier-Hill and Elandon Roberts are each in better standing following the riddance of Bostic. Drafted six selections apart (Grugier Hill at No. 208, Roberts at No. 214), these two prospects will battle from the opening whistle of training camp.

Last week, when we evaluated the roster chances of every Patriots’ draft pick, Grugier-Hill was given a 5/10 chance of making the team. Flip a coin; heads, he’ll make it, and tails, he won’t.

"At first, Grugier-Hill’s best bet at making the team will be on special teams. There is reason to believe that his speedy 6-foot-2 frame will be put to practice on punt coverage in training camp. Down the road, Grugier-Hill could factor into sub packages on settled defense if he puts in enough hours in the weight room."

As for Roberts, well, his climb is a bit steeper.

"Roberts’ only path to the roster (or even practice squad for that matter) is through special teams, much like fellow 2016 draft pick Grugier-Hill. Who knows, maybe that knack for tackling will shine through in training camp and Roberts will force the Patriots to retain him, but it looks like special teams is his only hope."

Nonetheless, the departure of Bostic means good things for Roberts.
